I first heard of The Hairlips 5-6 years ago, I remember that Giacomo Sensibles gave me a CD and told me “We played together in the States, listen to this band, I think that you might like them”.
I actually ended up listening to that CD for a long time. I remember them having good choruses and catchy melodies which made for an overall nice record in the wake of the best US pop-punk tradition. After a while, I got distracted by other records and I lost track of this band but I’m very happy to know that they are still a thing and above all they are part of the tribute of Moms Basement Records to the Manges.
Chatting with Eric the band’s Lead Vocalist And Drummer about the Manges he tells us “They are an amazing band! I’ve been a huge fan of them from when I was a teenager. I’ve only gotten to see them play live a few times since I’m from Illinois. Every time was amazing and I was always blown away by there energy!”
For those who have been able to follow us on this fun journey, it isn’t the first band we interview for this special dedication to Las Pezia rockers, and for sure there is a small factor that unites all the interviews, everyone has spoken about the energy of the Manges live shows. Anyone, Who has seen them at least once live, can only agree!
Continuing, Eric tells us “I remember picking up the Queers/Manges split Acid Beaters and coming across I don’t wanna live in hell. I immediately liked the Fuck out of it and still do. Hopefully we didn’t butcher it…”
Mi è subito piaciuta tantissimo e continua ancora a piacermi nello stesso modo. Spero solo di non averla rovinata!”
When I’m behind the PC to write an article for IBR, I always try to share positive contents and thoughts. I’m always seeing the glass half full even in the most distressing contexts.
Obviously, objectivity will never be the strongest point of this site (my space, my rules!), so when I’m talking about one of my favourite Italian bands I feel a bit relieved and I approach the draft with a big smile on my face.
Whom am I talking about? Obviously MEGA from Milan/Monza, they are our good brothers and our not dumb like myself and the guys in my band Volkov. For those unfamiliar with this band, they were born from the ashes of different groups of Milan hinterland (Gambe di Burro for example), I highly recommend to make up for lost time and give them a listen if you aren’t already familiar with them. Conversation About Nothing remains one of the best albums released in Italy in recent years, trust me.
Without further rambling on, I come back to the main topic of the article and we talk about their more than due participation in the tribute to the Manges, we interviewed Mitan, bassist and official spokesman of the band (ok, I meant to say the most reliable) who told us for Italian kids and bands, The Manges are a kind of flag, a piece of our heart… they helped in establishing and influencing our punkrock/poppunk/ramonescore/whatever scene and still they’re around and kicking! If it wasn’t for them, nobody from abroad would know that also in the Belpaese we can play Ramones! Wouldn’t you agree with him? I have often found myself at shows abroad chatting with locals punx and after the classic stereotypical jokes about Italy, inevitably we always end up talking about the Manges. Regarding the track chosen for the tribute, Mitan tells us “The Manges – I Was a Teenage Rocker ep ” was the 1st 7 inch ep that we bought in a small punkrock records shop in Milano (Zabriskie Point), we were kids, and it all started with that! We’re proud to take part to this tribute with SOS I’m in love, our favourite song out of that 7″ .
I am very curious to listen to their interpretation, what about you?” MEGA:
Come dargli torto?
MEGA:
Hands up who has never listened to Banana Brain at least once and headbanged for the whole duration of this fantastic album? Well, I guess you’re just one of the very few and without going into unnecessary details we will make a brief introduction of the band. The Mugwumps are an Austrian trio from Innsbruck, who have been active for over 15 years – interspersed by a 4 year break – they play old school punk rock that they define themselves as a mix between Screeching Weasel and Head.
Considered by everyone as one of the leading bands of the European punk rock scene, their contribution is undoubtedly an added value for the tribute album set up by Moms Basement Records to the Las Pezia rockers.
So we talked a bit with Chris, singer and guitarist of the band about the Manges and he told us “They are a great band and great people!! When we 1st heard them we fell in love right away! When we 1st played with them we shit our pants!! Now we still buy all their records, like them a lot and highly respect them!!”.
Let’s see what he says about the song chosen for the compilation “We weren’t sure which song we should do. A few weeks before we recorded we played a Show in Italy where we did some Songs together with Andrea! One of the songs we played that night was Another Day …so we just picked that song because we like it a lot and we already knew how to play it!”. I must admit that “Another Day” is also one of my Manges favourite song and I really liked the interpretation of Mugwumps!
Abbiamo suonato anche Another Day quella notte, l’abbiamo quindi scelta perchè ci piace un sacco e sapevamo già come farla”.
I discovered this band in 2014, via a cordial request by Travis of Eccentric Pop Records, I listened and reviewed Knock It Off, a very enjoyable album that brought the Indianapolis trio under my radar.
It’s been almost 4 years and since then they have basically never stopped playing shows, releasing 2 full length albums and a 7” ep before joining this tribute organized by Moms Basement Records.
We had the opportunity to talk with the guys from the Putz and they told us “The Manges are plain and simple, straight up, true Ramones-influenced punk rock. They’re living proof that this music knows no boundaries and speaks to audiences worldwide. They’re the real deal, and we love ’em for it!”.
It’s a thought shared by almost every band present in this tribute and as for me it fills me with pride to know that an Italian band is so beloved also in the States. Continuing, they tell us about the song that they picked which is certainly one of the most famous songs by the Manges that contributed to increasing their popularity due to Screeching Weasel covering the same song on Teen Punks In Heat. “I Will Always Do is the perfect example of ballad pop punk, simply the perfect rhythm, the right refrain from sing-a-long and the right sweet words of love. The world needs more songs like these “.
And I agree with them. THE PUTZ: BANDCAMP: https://theputz.bandcamp.com/ FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/theputzrock/
THE PUTZ: BANDCAMP: https://theputz.bandcamp.com/ FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/theputzrock/
The Land of the Rising Sun (Japan) is a country that has always fascinated me, not just because of cultural differences, but because of their way of approaching life totally different compared to us Europeans, maybe because despite all these differences sometimes there are points of contact that lessens the distance and make us more similar and closer together.
It is this gut feeling towards the Ramones that represents in our case the point of contact between the So-Cho Pistons and our beloved Manges and certainly justifies the participation of the Japanese to the tribute.
So we interviewed Nass (for those who didn’t know – boss of Dumb Records – the cult ramonescore label in Japan) that immediately make everything clear saying “We think THE MANGES are the No.1 band in the European RAMONE PUNK scene who have both high levels of popularity and ability. They are our best friends, we have like-mindedness, and also are good rivals. Our playing styles have a lot in common, they are one of the best Punk bands!”
But how did they choose the piece to cover? Nass tells us “We supported THE MANGES/THE APERS Japan tour in 2012. We met THE MANGES for the first time in Osaka, they played Uncle Walt as the first song of their sound check. It left a strong impression on us as it was the very first song we watched them play in person, and is also one of our favorite songs. One of the manges many masterpieces of RAMONES STYLE PUNK songs which we wanted to play”. Well, that clarifies things for Nass & So-Cho Pistons. In this sense, Japan does not seem that far away, right?
Back to our bi weekly appointment and now it’s a home match, presenting the first Italian band of the Manges Tribute: ladies and gentlemen, we are pleased to announce TOUGH. For those of you who follow us you should know that we have often talked about them, but for those of you who don’t know them we are ready to make a brief summary.
Born ten years ago from the ashes of the Stinking Polecats, the Piacenza trio led by Chris (bass, vocals) and Biso (drums) after several lineup changes on guitar they found stability about two years ago when Ivan joined the band. Over the years the band has played many concerts around Italy and Europe, released 5 albums, numerous EPs and splits, confirming that TOUGH are one of the most prolific and appreciated italian bands.
Not happy enough with their discography, they are ready to celebrate the tenth anniversary by publishing a BEST OF in CD and a brand new 7″.
We had a chat with Chris who told us about his relationship with the Manges that “It’s pretty simple to explain what the Manges mean to me, they’re brothers. I met them in the mid nineties when we were kids and we shared a lot of cool things. We grew up together as musicians but most important as men, Andrea is one of my best friends and is one of the best people i know. Mass is a fucking genius and Manuel is what punk rock should be, 100% heart. We shared stages, places, holidays, emotions, and always with our music in background. They play as they are, straight and simple. That’s why I love them and they are a big piece of my heart“.
I know Chris and the boys and I’m sure his words are honest and 100% sincere, on the other hand after more than 20 years of friendship, could it be different?
Regarding the song chosen for the tribute Chris tells us that “We choose Longway Back because they never play this song and I think only few people know it. But in my opinion is one of the best they wrote (ed, also for me!) because is a sad but funny song to play. We had so much fun during the recording session especially when i made all the vocals parts. I hope they will like it“.
It rocks, Chris. Congratulations!
Spacca, Chris, spacca. Complimenti!
After alternating European and US bands, now it’s time to head for Canada and introduce the Vapids. Well, I honestly don’t think they really need a big introduction, so rather than go over their bio, I’ll briefly talk about my relationship with Jimmy and the Vapids. I still remember when I first discovered The Point Remains The Same it was like receiving an electroshock: Jimmy & Co succeeded in the arduous task of making an extremely good record free of choruses, melodies and any standard structure in the composition of a punk rock song: something unique and rare in a genre that tends to homologate anything. It was during the first Punk Rock Raduno that I finally had the pleasure of meeting Jimmy and since then a great and sincere friendship was born that goes beyond the simple common passion for punk rock.
It’s interesting to understand the plot that comes from the contribution of the Vapids to the tribute: how will a band that has made anti-melodies its warhorse to cover a band such as the Manges? We discussed about it with Jimmy, singer and guitarist of the band who first told us about their correlation with the Manges “When I discovered the Manges in the mid-nineties, it was like a mind altering experience. Things were just uncanny. Here we are, both bands, started in 1993, influenced by exactly the same kinda music and bands, putting out our own records, dedicated to everything DIY. Even more so, Andrea and I were born on the same day in the same year, both sing and play guitar (the same guitar as of this year!) we both strangely look like famous Hollywood superstars (me-John Cusack, Andrea- George Clooney) we both are kinda short, we both quit smoking in the same year, we both drive Blue mid-size cars, we both think that G-SHARP is the best key for punk rock songs (because then the E chord is on the dive every time) I mean, the similarities between us two are just undeniable. As for the band as a whole, There is just no denying the importance they are to our punk rock universe. Great songs, great guys, dedication (now more than ever), the list just goes on. And the fact that the band just gets better every year. God bless the internet, and god bless THE MANGES“.
But now is the time to unveil a curious anecdote about the piece chosen by Vapids and Jimmy always tells us about it “Andrea suggested this song especially for us (The Vapids). He told me that his original version of the song (Secret Agent In East Berlin) was a ballad type song, slower than usual, and much much different than how it appears on the Go Down album. He told me that he thought our own slow songs were some of his favorite slow punk rock songs ever. As word got out about the tribute record, it was hard for me to decide what song to do, so I just asked him what he’d think was the best choice for us, and I got the story about the song, and he thought it was best for us. The original version on Go Down is a perfect example of the simple fast magic that the Manges have. The song rules. Our version is something of an acquired taste. I’ve been told it sounds like “cherry bomb” by the Runaways”
I was lucky enough to listen the song in preview last year on Sunday Post-Punk Rock Raduno: as already anticipated by Jimmy is a new interpretation of the song but trust me, the cover really rules!
Dio benedica internet, e dio benedica i MANGES“.
Third episode of our saga dedicated to the tribute to the Manges by Mom’s Basement Records, this time we return to the USA, exactly to Ft. Wayne, in Indiana.
The Flamingo Nosebleed is a punk rock trio active for about 10 years, they toured several time US, Canada and Mexico, released two albums, an ep, a handful of appearances on compilation and as last work, a split in 2016 with our dear Killtime; well, a more than respectable career.
Last but not least, a curious connection with the Manges: two years ago the guys were backing up Andrea for a couple of gigs in Hawaii! Can we then say that theirs participation in the compilation is more than due? I would say yes.
We had the opportunity to chat with Jake Emissions, singer/guitarist and founder of the band who told us: What the Manges mean to me. The Ramones have obviously been one of my favourite bands, kinda goes without saying for everyone on this comp. That being said I came of age in a time when they were ending their career so I never got to see them. So to me, the Manges are the closest thing there is to seeing the Ramones play/release music. There are a lot of Ramonescore bands I love, but the Manges have always been the most influential to me.
Important words from Jake: for him basically after the Ramones there are the Manges, wow! I imagine that for Andrea & Co it is a matter of pride to know that their music can influence another band in the other corner of the planet. Continue Jack: When I get writers block I come back to tracks like “Hit the Punchball” to get amped up! That’s why we chose it!
And here we are with the second episode of our interview dedicated to the tribute to the Manges! This time it’s the Dutch band The Windowsill who have been active since 2011 and born from an idea of Marien ex-guitarist of The Apers. The group is completed by Ivo, current Apers drummer and basically in all the dutch punk rock bands, Jerry Hormone (also ex-Apers) on bass and Sander on second guitar.
In short, a band of veterans of the Dutch scene that with their experience we are certain will give added value to this compilation; we had the pleasure of chatting with Marien who told us “We (as The Apers) saw The Manges for the first time in 2000 in a place called Thunder Road in Voghera Italy. They blew us away, immediately made us realise we had to step up our game; they were tight, no-nonsense, had an actual army and wrote really good songs… Now we (as The Windowsill) just played with them last New Years Eve, nothing has changed, only we are friends now, thank God… do you know how strong Massimo is?”
Well, longtime friends. From Marien’s words it’s easy to notice a more than deserved form of respect, thanks for the many gigs, tours and an endless discography that makes the Manges one of the most long-lived bands of the European punk rock scene. Continue Marien “We chose Don’t Mess it Up, because we thought we could do it well and add a little Windowsill without ruining it…“
We are very curious about their choice, they have opted for a classic, and we are all confident that the dutch guys have interpreted the song properly… without ruining it! We thank Marien for being a part of this and we can’t wait to announce the next band!
As many of you already know, Mom’s Basement Records, an emerging US label, has announced the release of a tribute to our beloved Manges. An ambitious project that involves many bands from every corner of the world and that immediately attracted our attention. So while I was chatting with John – founder of the label – we were talking about to find a way to collaborate so we came up with idea to release a series of short interviews to present the bands that will pay homage to the Las Pezia Rockers.
The first band announced was Horror Section, from USA who picked Barrage of Hate. The Missouri foursome which is a band of the Eccentric Pop Records label (but they also released two splits with Mom’s Basement) are one of the most interesting emerging pop-punk bands; that I personally started to listening only a couple of years back when the split with Dan Vapid And The Cheats was released. So, if they have the Prophet’s blessing, do you want it not to be a solid band?
Dave – singer and guitarist of the band tells us “The Manges are one of my favorite and most important bands! I first got into them when The Manges R Good Enough had just come out. Shortly after I got to see them play in Carbondale, IL when they came to the states on tour. That was the first time I ever went to Carbondale and I ended up making great friends there and moved down there to go to school. Years have passed and they still put out great records and I’ve been lucky enough to see them a few more times live (and they never disappoint). I’m honored to be a part of this comp. All hail the Manges!“
What has always struck me in Horror Section is that they are fast, have excellent melodies and this “dark side” that give a little mysterious aura to the band. It is therefore very interesting to see how these characteristics will be combined with a song like Barrage Of Hate, one of the most famous song of the band and a true trademark of Manges-sound.
Dave tells us “Barrage of Hate is classic Manges and it’s been one of my favorite songs of theirs for years. Great melody and the lyrics fit nicely with our band’s theme. Dark and menacing words matched with trusty chords and a killer hook.“
Ho iniziato ad ascoltarli quando venne pubblicato The Manges ‘R Good Enough.
Parole oscure e minacciose accompagnate dai soliti fidati accordi in grado di conquistarti all’istante!“
