Introducing The Putz: Punk Rock Pioneers and Ethical Pricing in the Modern Music Industry

IBR is back with a new record. This time, it’s a band that’s a new addition to our label, and we’re talking about The Putz. For those who don’t know them, they’re a punk rock band from the American Midwest. Punk rock and the American Midwest might sound like flannel shirts and long beards to many of you, but this trio, going against the grain, plays a direct, no-frills, super melodic punk rock, just the way I like it.

“On And Up And Out” is a 7″ that contains 4 songs that fully represent the band’s style. Listen to them and form your own opinion. When good old Henry from Memorable But Not Honorable asked me if I was interested in co-producing the record, honestly, I accepted without thinking twice. And once I listened to it, I was even more convinced and happy to have contributed to the release of this 7″.

The reasons are simple: it’s a band I like – and that’s the main reason for me to produce a record (which in other words means putting up the cash) – and above all, it’s a band that works hard with tours and concerts all over North America. In the end, if the band doesn’t work hard and believe in themselves, why should I believe in them?

Another small digression: let’s talk about 7″s. It’s my favorite format but, let’s be clear, it’s now obsolete and prohibitively expensive for many. They used to be bought/sold easily for 5 euros, but in 2024 it’s impossible to maintain those prices. Many collectors complain – and they are absolutely right – but just do a little research and ask for some quotes to realize that selling a 7″ for 8 euros is an ethically correct price to balance the books as much as possible, without taking advantage of the enthusiasts who still support this small niche of punk rock.

I won’t go on any longer, but I recommend one last time to listen to the EP and form your own opinion, and if you want to support the band and the label, it wouldn’t hurt.

HEAD Tribute Album – Mom’s Basement Records presents The Putz

It’s Monday again, so that means it’s time to announce another band from the upcoming HEAD tribute album. This time it’s another MBR family member, we’re talking about the Putz! These guys are one of the best in the USA (as if you already didn’t know that) they’ve dropped 2 full lengths and a 12 ep on the best punk rock label on the planet Eccentric Pop Records and they’ve also worked with us on the Hole In One reissue and the Passport Split series vol.3 with the Proton Packs.

We spoke with Dougie and he had this to say about the HEAD Tribute album, “Head is exactly what you’d expect a “Ramonescore” band to sound like, in all the best ways. Simple, fun, repetitious, witty songs about the darker, more off-beat side of life.

Don’t Go Looking In the Closet is a perfect example. Classic Ramonesy song structure, tongue-in-cheek black humor, and a catchy as hell chorus. This song was a no-brainer when it came time to record our track for the record.”

The Manges Tribute Album – Mom’s Basement Records presents The Putz

Ho conosciuto questa band nel 2014, sotto cordiale richiesta di Travis della Eccentric Pop Records, mi ritrovai ad ascoltare e recensire Knock It Off, disco decisamente gradevole che fece entrare nelle mie grazie il terzetto di Indianapolis.

Son passati quasi 4 anni e da allora fondamentalmente non si sono mai fermati continuando a fare tanti concerti, pubblicando due album e un 7″ prima di unirsi anche loro al tributo organizzato da Moms Basement Records.
Abbiamo avuto occasione di parlare con i ragazzi dei Putz che ci hanno detto “I Manges sono chiari e semplici, dritti, e fanno vero punk rock influenzato dai Ramones. E’ la prova che questo genere musicale non conosce confini e si rivolge a un pubblico di tutto il mondo. Sono davvero autentici e li amiamo per questo!“. E’ un pensiero condiviso praticamente da quasi ogni band presente in questo tributo e per quanto mi riguarda mi riempie di orgoglio sapere che una band italiana riesca ad essere così amata negli States.
Continuando ci parlano del pezzo che hanno scelto, sicuramente uno dei brani più famosi dei Manges che ha contribuito ad accrescere la loro popolarità grazie alla cover degli Screeching Weasel presente su Teen Punk in Heat “I Will Always Do è il perfetto esempio di ballad pop punk. Semplicemente il ritmo perfetto, il giusto ritornello da sing-a-long e le giuste parole d’amore sdolcinate. Il mondo ha bisogno di più canzoni come queste“.
Ed io sono d’accordo con loro.

The Putz – 2014 – Knock It Off

Sei un over-30? Hai il primo accenno di panzetta? I capelli bianchi iniziano ad essere sempre più numerosi ma ancora non riesci a toglierti le All-Stars e quel chiodo ormai vecchio e consumato? Insomma, se ti ritrovi almeno in parte in questa serie di stereotipi e sei cresciuto pestando la testa contro il muro ascoltando Ramones/Screeching Weasel/Queers probabilmente i Putz fanno al caso tuo.
Ma chi sono i Putz? I Putz sono un terzetto di Indianapolis con una scimmia pazzesca per il punk-rock – quello figo che tanto piace a me – degli anni ’90: semplice, diretto, con ritornelli accattivanti e coretti a profusione. Tramite la Eccentric Pop Records – che sta dando spazio a tante band interessanti –  hanno quindi pubblicato Knock It Off in vinile (250 copie, 125 rosse/125 bianche), secondo full-length composto da 12 tracce passate dalle parti del Sonic Iguana per essere lavorate da un certo Mass Giorgini.
Le premesse sono tutte positive e l’ascolto dell’album non fa altro che confermare.. infatti fila via liscio che è un piacere, grazie alla giusta presenza di tastierine (per fortuna senza eccedere più del dovuto), qualche assolo e la giuste dose di “poppettosità” che non fa mai annoiare. Non credo sia difficile che già dopo un solo ascolto pezzi come Operate, Fast Food Fantasy, Lunatic (il mio pezzo preferito!), Knock It Off ti sia appiccicano in  testa come è successo a me. C’è anche spazio per la cover di un classico degli Angels, My boyfriend’s back che sinceramente è forse l’unico pezzo che non mi ha entusiasmato.
Ok, non stiamo parlando dell’album dell’anno, ma Knock It Off complessivamente mi è piaciuto parecchio e credo che continuerò ad ascoltarlo ancora per un po’.
Attualmente sono in giro per gli States in tour, quindi se vi trovate da quelle parti magari fate un salto a un loro concerto e compratevi questo vinile che non è per niente male. In alternativa potete procurarvelo tramite la Eccentric Pop Records qui.
