Hello guys, how are you? Welcome back to IBR headquarters once again! It’s a pleasure to chat with you again!
MIKE: Ciao bello, thanks for having us back. All is good here, hope things are great for you as well.

So, September 5 2012. It’s a very important date to me. Well, being that you guys are such a hard-working band, this day doesn’t make a lot of sense to you but actually it was the date of the first show I booked (together with my buddy Ame) since I moved to Milan. IBR wasn’t a thing at the time but I clearly remember everything and that show really pushed me to start doing something (that I hoped would be cool) in Milan. Do you remember that show/weekend we spent together?
MIKE: Of course, I remember, we were with our Chinese bassplayer Zhong at the time and it was one of the first shows of a month-long tour. It was at Ligera and you got us some great pasta, from your mom or grandma if I’m not mistaken. You did a great job there and were a gracious host. Your apartment was lovely too. Do you still live there?  There was this abandoned building next door, which our GPS told us was actually your place (haha). I’m happy it wasn’t!

Yes, I still live there but the abandoned building is now destroyed!ahahah! So 8 years later, and after thousands of shows, what has changed for DeeCracks? (Don’t say bass-players! 🙂 )
MATT: Not very much really, We all have gotten a little older but I’d like to say the attitude hasn’t changed.

In Addition to DeeCracks, you all have different side-projects (Matt with Ratcliffs & Jagger Holly) (Mike … I can’t count how many bands that you play with) how do you manage to keep up with all of those different obligations? Also, a bit of news over the past few days. It was announced that Mike will play the drums at Punk Rock Raduno for the Mopes, how did this amazing opportunity come about?
MIKE: Yeah, it’s so awesome! I can’t wait for that show! I’m really excited for it. Basically Jughead texted me to see if I could play at Punk Rock Raduno with Mopes and of course I said yes. Jughead teamed up with us and Will from Zatopeks to do a special Screeching Weasel/Mopes/Even in Blackouts set at our Sweet Sixteen Festival last September, so I guess, he must have liked the way I played there. I’m super happy about it! I’m always grateful when someone approaches me to fill in or play in a band with them, it’s always an honour and it fills my heart that people dig my drumming, after all, it’s my happy place.

Let’s talk about Punk Rock Raduno. It’s not the biggest festival, but I’m pretty sure it’s one of the most beloved festival in the world. Being that you played/attended at every edition, what are your feelings about the festival? And what do you think is the secret behind the success of the festival?
MATT: Hm… well if you are looking at Europe during springtime and summer you might have noticed there’s a ton of festivals going on! If you ask me, there’s way too many. Every now and then we are playing some of them but I have to say I don’t really like it. It’s just very unpersonal and stressful. Raduno feels a bit different though. It feels more like a family reunion, you know? Everybody’s there for the same cause! Bands and fans! It’s like amongst all of those parties there’s one just for us!

It’s pretty well-known that way back in 2013, you were banned from USA. I don’t wanna go back to that infamous story but is the ban permanent or are you working on finding a solution to be able to go back to USA?
MIKE: Yeah, it’s a never-ending story really. As of now we are still banned, but we are still trying to make it back there one day. Never say never! Maybe once Matt will write a worldwide sensational big hit song, we’ll make it (haha).

Although this sad story might have demoralized a touring band, you rolled up your sleeves and toured everywhere possible. We’re talking Russia, Israel, China, Mexico, Turkey, just to name a few, most of which are not really conventional destinations for punk rock bands. What can you tell us about the punk rock scene in those countries? Leather jackets and ripped blue jeans?
MATT: Our main goal has always been getting around as much as possible. We hardly ever turn down offers, especially when it’s about shows or tours abroad. The cool thing about punk rock is that it connects the people all over the world. Scenes are the same everywhere.
Of course there are cultural differences In different places. Like for example Japanese bands practice hard until they reach perfection, while we don’t (haha). And by the way, no one should be “demoralized” because they got kicked out of the USA.

Last summer you guys did a great tour with the legendary CJ Ramone. How it was? What can you tell us about CJ? How is CJ behind the curtain? Any funny stories you would like to share with us?
MATT: We like to remember it as the ‘No AC Tour‘. It was kinda hard because last summer was brutally hot… But every show was great! It was professional to a certain degree (which we aren’t really used to), but the atmosphere was super relaxed! CJ is a great guy and really down to earth and yet absolutely aware of how big of a impact the Ramones were on thousands and thousands of people (was and still are) We were really grateful that he chose us to support him on his (final???) Euro tour. And yes, there are some funny stories but I don’t think I wanna share them here (haha).

Let’s talk about records, Sonic Delusions is your latest full length album and two years later, are you satisfied with the final result? What is the general feedback or opinions that you got from friends and fans? What’s it like being on a major label now?
MIKE: Yeah man, it’s been great. Our fans really seemed to enjoy it and thanks to Pirates Press Records we found some new listeners, that we hadn’t reached before. I wouldn’t do anything differently with it really, maybe the artwork wasn’t our strongest, but that’s a matter of taste. We wanted to stick out and be different then the other bands on PPR, not only sound wise. So, it was all good. It’s not a major label though, it’s a very ambitious punk rock indie label that’s turning the right screws. We’re really happy to be a part of it and thankful for the opportunity. We like the fact that we got a special place in their hearts also, as we are a little different. Pirates Press and DeeCracks is not an obvious fit, but they took a chance on us and we took a chance on them, and we both thrived with our matching work ethics, vision and spirit. So, in my mind, it’s perfect.

For your upcoming italian tour you will release a new 7″ “…Can’t Get It Right” through Striped Records and Bad Man Records which has two brand new songs and two songs that were previously released on compilations. What can you tell us about it? I had the chance to listen to them ahead of time (thanks for doing that!!!) and I can say it’s another solid release in your discography!


MATT: Well the “new” songs are actually taken from the 2017 Sonic Delusions session. We always record extra material for 7″s, compilations and so on. (well I guess every band does that…), “Killed by Death” was featured on the Mom’s Basement‘s HEAD tribute compilation and then there’s a newly recorded version of the song ‘Caroline’ (the original one was part of the OCW 30 seconds songs compilation). We are really happy to have Striped with us for this one since they always did a great job taking care of our merch!

Whats next for you guys after the Italian Tour? New album? Big tour in the farest corners of the world?
MIKE: You know us, there is no stopping us from hangover hoppin’ all around the world. We’ll be hitting the road again in April around Europe, mostly Gemany, Austria and bella Italia. In May we will record a new album, Pirates Press is gonna release it once it’s ready. So we’re looking forward to that. We will be touring in France and Spain in fall and we’ll do Japan again sometime in 2021. That’s all, more definite plans will come once the new record is ready, so stay tuned.

Era il 30 Settembre del 1989 quando a Leicester in Inghilterra, un ragazzo di nome Christopher Ward, si trova davanti l’occasione della vita che suona proprio come una mission impossible: sostituire un certo Dee Dee nei Ramones.
Johnny Ramone disse al riguardo “Fu davvero pessimo, dimenticò ogni cosa che provammo-stai calmo, non muoverti tanto, muoviti solo quando ti sentirai a tuo agio. Suona in maniera semplice, sembrerà che tu stia suonando pesantemente. Ma rovinò tutto! Si tagliò un dito dopo solo una canzone e si mosse in continuazione sul palco. Ma dal secondo concerto in poi fu sempre ottimo” (cit. tratta dalla Biografia Ufficiale dei Ramones di Jim Bessman, cap.13).
Nonostante questo inizio non proprio felice, grazie al suo contagioso entusiasmo che diede linfa vitale alla band e performance all’altezza del suo predecessore, Cj riuscì a conquistare la fiducia di tutti, anche dei fan più sfegatati ancora in shock per l’addio di sua Maestà Dee Dee.
Il resto è storia: centinaia di infuocati live e tour per il continente, Mondo Bizarro, Acid Eaters, Adios Amigos fino allo  scioglimento del 6 Agosto del ’96. Ma Cj non finisce qui.
Dopo tanti anni spesi con i Los Gusanos e i Bad Chopper, nel 2012 inizia la sua carriera solista e tra un tour e l’altro tour in ogni angolo del globo (primo musicista punk americano a suonare a Cuba!) pubblica due album, un 7″ e il nuovissimo split con i nostri Manges.
In una fredda e scarna biografia potremmo sintetizzare così la storia di Cj Ramone.
Ma noi fan dei Ramones, siamo dei cazzo di sentimentali e mettiamo il cuore davanti a tutto anche a discapito della razionalità. Senza voler discutere del talento, Cj l’ho sempre visto come “uno di noi“, uno di quelli che “ce l’ha fatta” ad uscire dal mucchio ed avere il grandissimo privilegio di poter far parte di una delle sue band preferite. Alzi la mano chi non avrebbe voluto essere stato al suo posto. Penso di essermi immaginato almeno mille volte la famosa telefonata tra lui e Johnny dove veniva ufficialmente arruolato nei Ramones.
Cosa rende Cj davvero straordinario e diverso dagli altri? Sicuramente il fatto di non aver MAI e poi MAI dimenticato di essere prima un fan, e poi il bassista dei Ramones. Nessuna attitudine da rock-star del cazzo, ma solo tanta passione e infinita riconoscenza. Come non volergli bene? Chapeau.
Insomma, una storia parallela e che ben si intreccia con il cammino dei Manges, partiti tanti fa anni da La Spezia come una band qualsiasi, e che piano piano a suon di dischi, concerti in Europa e negli States è riuscita ad emergere e a guadagnarsi – con ampio merito – il rispetto di tutti.
Ed il già citato split con Cj non è altro che il giusto premio per chi da oltre 20 anni si fa il culo come se fosse all’ esordio e che ti pettina per bene ad ogni concerto. Chi era al Cox18 a fine Ottobre sa di cosa parlo.
D’altra parte non capita tutti i giorni che gli Screeching Weasel coverizzino uno tuo brano, o di fare split con band del calibro di Queers, Hard-Ons o Head.
Ed infine ci sono i Ratbones. Si, la mia band da due anni a questa parte. Non ho molto da dire anche perchè non mi piace farmi pubblicità… è già un grosso onore poter suonare a un concerto del genere. Sono davvero felice ed emozionato anche che siamo stati coninvolti come I Buy Records nell’organizzazione della serata insieme con l’Honky Tonky, Otis Tours, No Reason Booking e Troublezine, vuol dire che qualcosa di buono anche noi riusciamo a farla.
Ah, dimenticavo un dettaglio non di poco conto. A questo giro la backing band di Cj sarà formata da Josh e Chris degli Huntingtons, una delle mie band preferite e sicuramente tra i più idonei a suonare i pezzi dei Ramones “alla Ramones”.
Insomma vi aspettiamo numerosi!

CJ Ramone – 2014 – Understand Me?

A distanza di qualche anno dallo stupendo Reconquista, torna CJ Ramone con un 7”, semplice anteprima del nuovo album Last Chance to Dance in uscita per Fat Wreck il 25 Novembre.
Accompagnato da una backing band di tutto rispetto, CJ ci regala due bei pezzi, un inedito (ascolta qui) e una cover dei Black Flag sufficienti per farmi gioire. Che lo vogliamo accettare o no, l’ultimo vero Ramone è lui e anche in questi nuovi pezzi le intenzioni sono abbastanza chiare: omaggiare i fratellini, poche chiacchiere e buona musica.
La prima stampa è andata ormai esaurita (meno di 500 copie, ma è quasi pronta la prima ristampa), il nostro spacciatore ufficiale ha ormai finito le copie,  ma con un po’ di culo sono riuscito a trovare una copia qui, affrettatevi che non credo ne siano rimaste molte, magari fra qualche anno vi potrete bullare su Discogs di avere la prima edizione.

Troublefestival 2013 – 14.07.2013 – Parco Tittoni ( Desio, MB )

Il cambio di location porta fortuna al Troublefestival. Abbandonato lo Stadio del Rugby di Monza a favore dello splendido Parco Tittoni di Desio, finalmente abbiamo il piacere di trascorrere un’edizione all’asciutto senza il diluvio universale che ha da sempre contraddistinto il festival.

Quest’anno erano previsti due palchi: il Boschetto Stage con le esibizioni in acustico di Crooks, Phonograph e Labradors e il Main Stage con Gli Impossibili, PAY e il tanto atteso CJ Ramone.

Tra il mio solito ritardo e la fila interminabile per un panino con la salamella (cruda), mi perdo praticamente tutti i gruppi al Boschetto e mi dirigo subito verso il Main Stage.

Pochi minuti e iniziano Gli Impossibili. Piccola parentesi per i lettori non italiani: Gli Impossibili sono una band seminale del punk rock in italiano che tra alti (tanti) e bassi sono quasi 20 anni che calca i palchi italiani. Per l’occasione hanno eseguito per intero il loro primo album Impossimania del 1997 ( potete scaricarlo da qui, ma come sempre vi consiglio di acquistarlo, qui )  più In Fondo al Cuore, Cani Blu,  Sul Sedile Con Te, e la cover dei Fichissimi ( altra band seminale italiana) de La Tipa della Casa Occupata. I suoni non erano proprio perfetti ma credo che tutti i presenti, così come me, hanno in pieno gradito la performance. Chi non hai mai ascoltato e cantato le canzoni di quest’album che parla di robot, ragazze, androidi e cervelli bruciati con i Queers e i Ramones? E’ stato molto bello vedere tanti volti sorridenti canticchiare e magari rievocare ricordi dell’adolescenza legati a queste canzoni. Chapeu.

Subito dopo è il turno dei PAY. Non mi piacciono e non mi hanno mai detto niente di particolare, quindi mi allontano dal palco per riposarmi un po’ prima dell’inizio di CJ Ramone.

Questa volta ad accompagnarlo ci sono due membri dei Social Distortion, Jonny “2 Bags” Wickersham alla chitarra e David Jr. Hidalgo alla batteria (clone di Ric Savage di Cacciatori di tesori!).
Se il figlio d’arte ha svolto in maniera impeccabile la propria parte, Jonny “2 Bags” si merita più di una tiratina d’orecchie. Ok, gli accordi tra un giro e l’altro sono quasi sempre gli stessi ma bisogna ricordarli e bisogna farli SEMPRE bene. A dimostrazione che in pochi possono suonare come faceva Johnny. Ma lo “perdono”, ero troppo gasato di vedere ancora una volta Cj che il resto mi è sembrato superfluo.
Detto questo, l’inizio è stato da bomba con  Judy is a Punk e Blitzkrieg Bop , seguiti (come sempre in ordine pseudo-random) dai classici dei Fast Four come Beat On The Brat, Cretin Hop, Listen To My Heart, Endless Vacation, Glad To See You Go, I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend, Pinhead, California Sun, Commando, Do You Wanna Dance?, Strenght To Endure, 53rd and 3rd, Rockaway Beach, Psycho Therapy alternati ai pezzi di Reconquista (What We Gonna Do Now?, Ghost Ring, Aloha Oe, You’re the only one).
Primo encore con due bellissime cover  Down Here (with The Rest Of Us) dei Social Distortion ( …se si può dire cover…) e R.A.M.O.N.E.S. (visto il concerto annullato dei Motorhead di qualche settimana fa direi che è stato un bel regalo!). Chiusura finale con I Wanna Be Sedated.

Cj Ramone. Possiamo considerarlo l’ultimo vero Ramones? In una guerra inutile su chi è il batterista più veloce, quello più bravo o quello originale di sicuro è l’unico che fa qualcosa, prima di tutto, per mantenere alto l’onore dei Ramones. E poi Cj è un po’ l’emblema di tutti noi: chi non ha mai sognato di suonare nella propria band preferita? Lui sognava di suonare con i Ramones, ci è riuscito e non l’ha dimenticato. Poco importa se adesso è uomo di quasi 50 anni senza i lunghissimi capelli degli esordi. Non ha bisogno di una parrucca per dimostrare di essere ancora un Ramone. E’ sufficiente mantenere ancora l’entusiasmo immutato del ragazzino poco più che 20enne che il 30 Settembre del 1989 raccolse la pesantissima eredità di un certo Dee Dee Ramone. Ok, vado a mettere di nuovo sul giradischi Reconquista. Lunga vita a Cj.
