Since the beginning of the label, Mom’s Basement Records has always followed the European punk rock scene with great interest and in particular the Italian scene, which is a reason that several Italian bands are present on the tribute compilation to the Manges. There’s a certain bond between the Ponches and the Manges and this has not escaped John. It’s in part due to the clear musical affinities, and also because of the collaboration with Andrea Manges in 2012 for their record The Long Goodbye … and if you consider that Lorenzo plays the drums for the Veterans the presence of the Ponches on the compilation is more than obvious.
After talking a bit with Zack, band’s singer and guitarist, tells us “My Manges-folgoration came in the early 2000s, when Lorenzo passed me the live tape of the Manges at El Paso in Turin, I think of ’97; I listened to it continuously for months and I still remember all the phrases of Andrea between one song and another, from “We are the Manges and we like Happy Days, the 50s and the Ramones” to a never banal “I can’t hear the guitar in the monitor”. From then on, I never stopped listening to them and it can be said that the Ponches were born also because of them”.
How many of you own that little tape? It’s not easy to find and the few who own it hold on to it very tightly: the Manges were a band since a couple of years, Hervé was still in the band playing the guitar and maybe few would have imagined a good career for four young guys from La Spezia!
Let’s see what song they have chosen “Well, it was very simple, we always agreed that in that period the Manges were super inspired and that in the split with the Queersthey could be the best things they have written, perhaps second only to the tracks on Go Down. In particular, Saving Private Pierson is simply perfect”.
Good choice!
Mom’s Basement Records sin dai suoi primi passi ha seguito con grande interesse il punk rock europeo e in particolare la scena italiana, motivo per il quale nella compilation tributo ai Manges sono presenti diverse realtà italiane. Non sarà sfuggito certamente al caro John un certo legame tra i Ponches e i Manges; un po’ per le chiare affinità musicali un po’ per la collaborazione con Andrea Manges nel 2012 per la realizzazione di The Long Goodbye… e se consideriamo anche che Lorenzo è il batterista dei Veterans la presenza dei Ponches sulla compilation è più che ovvia.
Abbiamo avuto modo di intervistare brevemente Zack, cantante e chitarrista della band che ci dice “La mia folgorazione mangesiana è avvenuta nei primi 2000, quando Lorenzo mi passò la cassetta del live dei Manges a El Paso di Torino, penso del ’97; l’ho ascoltata ininterrottamente per mesi e ricordo ancora tutte le frasi di Andrea tra un pezzo e l’altro, da “noi siamo i Manges e ci piacciono Happy Days, gli anni ’50 e i Ramones” a un mai banale “non sento la chitarra in spia”. Da lì in poi mai più ho smesso di ascoltarli e si può dire, che i Ponches nascono anche grazie a loro”.
Quanti di voi hanno quella cassettina? Non è affatto facile da trovare in giro e i pochi che la possiedono se la tengon ben stretta: i Manges erano una band solo da un paio di anni, c’era ancora Hervé alla chitarra e forse in pochi avrebbero immaginato una bella carriera per quattro giovani ragazzi di La Spezia!
Vediamo un po’ che pezzo hanno scelto “Mah, è stato semplicissimo, tra noi abbiamo sempre concordato sul fatto che in quel periodo i Manges fossero super ispirati e che nello split con i Queers ci siano tra le cose migliori che hanno scritto, forse seconde solo ai pezzi di Go Down. In particolare Saving Private Pierson è semplicemente perfetta”.
Ottima scelta.
Dopo il successo dello scorso anno torna in Italia, per la seconda volta il Monster Zero Summer Mash organizzato da Kevin Aper e la Monster Zero Family in collaborazione con la Otis Tour.
Non ho mai amato i festival per mille motivi diversi, ma al MM devo dire che si respira proprio un’atmosfera diversa: non è come quei festival abominevoli (qualcuno ha detto Rock In Idrho???) con gente a caso ma è una vera e propria festa tra amici provenienti da tutta Italia e da ogni angolo d’Europa (maggiori info qui).
Per un weekend l’Edonè di Bergamo sarà quindi il fulcro del punk-rock europeo e la presenza sarà davvero obbligatoria per tutti gli amanti del genere e della musica indipendente.
Inoltre l’ingresso è pure gratuito, non ci sono proprio motivi per lamentarsi!
Il giovedì ci sarà anche un bel warm-up con il Pre-Party MZSM: dj-set di Simo Riccobelli e show acustici a sorpresa. Le band che si “sfideranno” a colpi di 3 accordi e tante belle melodie saranno:

Arcore si sa, è tristemente nota per essere la residenza del Cavalier Silvio e del Bunga-Bunga, ma oltre a questo per fortuna c’è anche un bel Circolo Arci che spesso ospita concerti punk-rock interessanti; lo scorso sabato i Ponches son tornati da queste parti, un salto in Brianza è stato quindi d’obbligo.
Ad aprire la serata, i Porna & The Kokots, terzetto attivo oramai da qualche anno capitanati dal Pornacchione, vecchia conoscenza del punk rock italiano. Propongono un punk-rock molto grezzo e sporco stile primi The Queers, in alcuni passaggi mi ricordano anche i primissimi Black Flag, entrando in pratica nelle mie grazie. Come da copione, hanno fatto uno show breve ma intenso, interagendo spesso con il pubblico con numerose gag, battute e bestemmie graditissime ai presenti. Divertenti.
Rapido cambio di palco, ed è il turno dei The Fags un duo, basso + batteria, proveniente dalla Svizzera. Anche loro si aggirano su sonorità “alla Queers” ma con un approccio più melodico rispetto al gruppo del Porna. Onestamente non li conoscevo e non so se il fatto di suonare senza basso sia solo una situazione momentanea, ma a mio avviso è una scelta che li penalizza tantissimo, soprattutto dal vivo. I pezzi non sono affatto male, ma mi sono sembrati poco potenti… il punk rock è già un genere molto essenziale, se poi togli anche il basso… Da rivedere (ma con un bassista).
Giunge quindi il momento dei The Ponches. Il quartetto torinese si è dimostrato davvero in ottima forma, eseguendo moltissimi pezzi dell’ultimo album (ne abbiamo parlato qui), a memoria ricordo The 13th Round, Casablanca Café, Ferriera Beach, Korean Ships On The Horizon, Star War Inside Me ( con intrusione sul palco di Simo Riccobelli ), You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet e The Long Goodbye: in pratica i pezzi migliori. Hanno eseguito anche un pezzo nuovo, che sembra promettere bene per il futuro della band.
Terminato il concerto, a differenza del Silvio-Nazionale per noi non è previsto alcun tipo di Bunga-Bunga, ma un djset/playlist del Cartonato di Giacomo. Dopo qualche chiacchierata, facciamo il nostro rientro a casa dopo una serata tutto sommato piacevole.
Arcore you know, is sadly famous for being the residence of “Il Cavaliere” Silvio and Bunga-Bunga, but beyond that, fortunately there is also a nice Arci Club which often hosts interesting punk-rock concerts; last Saturday The Ponches returned there, so a trip to Brianza was therefore a must.
Opening the evening, the Porna & The Kokots, a trio active for some years led by Pornacchione, an old acquaintance of Italian punk rock. They present a punk-rock style that’s very raw and dirty as early “The Queers“, and in some parts also remind me of early Black Flag, entering them in my good graces. As expected, they did a show that was brief but intense, often interacting with the audience with numerous gags, jokes and swearing that most welcome to those present. Fun.
Rapid change of stage, and it is the turn of The Fags a duo, guitar + drums from Switzerland. They too are around “sound The Queers” but with a more melodic approach than Porna’s band. I honestly do not know them and I do not know if the fact of them playing without bass is just a temporary situation, but in my opinion it is a choice that penalizes them a lot, especially live. The pieces are not all bad, but they seemed dull and not very powerful … Every part in the punk rock is genre is very essential. If we take away the bass, it lacks…
At 3/4 of the show, sadly I prefered to go to the bar. They are to be reviewed (but only with a bass player).
Then comes the moment of The Ponches. The quartet from Turin proved to be in really good shape, performing many pieces of the last album (we talked about it here), my memory recalls The 13th Round, Casablanca Café, Ferriera Beach, Korean Ships On The Horizon, Star War Inside Me (with an intrusion on stage from Simo Riccobelli), You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet and The Long Goodbye: in practice were the best pieces they played that night. They also performed a new song, which made the future of the band look promising. After the concert, unlike our Silvio for us there is not any type of Bunga-Bunga, but a dj/playlist of The Cardboard of Giacomo. After some conversation, we made our way back home with an evening that was altogether pleasant.
