Because of my job I have the fortune (or misfortune, depending on your
point of view) to spend much time in front of the PC and i can listen to
lots of music; my daily plays are made of Ramones, then Screeching
Weasel, then Ramones, then Riverdales and then Ramones, Ramones and Ramones . Occasionally, however, that time happens to put something new
in the middle that’s different and sometimes it’s able to hit me. In
this case it’s The Creeps, a Canadian trio has now been active for
14 years, mea culpa, I knew them only few years ago, after listening for
the first time that fantastic Follow You Home, which I consider, even
today, one of the best EPs of the last 5-6 years. Via bandcamp, the
Canadian combo has, in practice, given to the fans (free download / free
donation) this new EP, Our Time, the second episode of a presumed
trilogy that began with These Walls.
I must say that this choice has me
a bit confused (dear labels! How the hell do you let a production like
this slip by you?): I really wanted to have a physical copy of this EP,
but the complaints are of no avail, we accept then gift and hope that
one day someone will open their eyes and decide to print it.
The
band has become unglued off the tag of bands of the early ramonescore label and veering towards a sound that’s very personal, no doubt
gloomier and darker than the first works: these 5 songs do nothing but
confirm the new course of The Creeps (the chords “anti-triviality” is
always in every song, respect!) perfect as background music during a
reading of Stephen King.
The songs that I liked the most are Move (this
simple refrain Moo-oooo-oove, Moo-oooo-oove entered my head in a
second), Over and Out, and Stagger Through The City. Particular is
not insignificant, is finally producing totally DIY except for the
master produced by Dave Williams at Rock Among Us: double chapeau then
for The Creeps, a lot of quality and attitude are not easily found around
these days.I look forward to a new full-length (and maybe some gig
around Italy), in the meantime I will continue to lobotomize myself with
this EP, I suggest you do it too and while you are at it, donate some
money to the Creeps, because they deserve it.
