And here we are with the second episode of our interview dedicated to the tribute to the Manges! This time it’s the Dutch band The Windowsill who have been active since 2011 and born from an idea of Marien ex-guitarist of The Apers. The group is completed by Ivo, current Apers drummer and basically in all the dutch punk rock bands, Jerry Hormone (also ex-Apers) on bass and Sander on second guitar.
In short, a band of veterans of the Dutch scene that with their experience we are certain will give added value to this compilation; we had the pleasure of chatting with Marien who told us “We (as The Apers) saw The Manges for the first time in 2000 in a place called Thunder Road in Voghera Italy. They blew us away, immediately made us realise we had to step up our game; they were tight, no-nonsense, had an actual army and wrote really good songs… Now we (as The Windowsill) just played with them last New Years Eve, nothing has changed, only we are friends now, thank God… do you know how strong Massimo is?”
Well, longtime friends. From Marien’s words it’s easy to notice a more than deserved form of respect, thanks for the many gigs, tours and an endless discography that makes the Manges one of the most long-lived bands of the European punk rock scene. Continue Marien “We chose Don’t Mess it Up, because we thought we could do it well and add a little Windowsill without ruining it…“
We are very curious about their choice, they have opted for a classic, and we are all confident that the dutch guys have interpreted the song properly… without ruining it! We thank Marien for being a part of this and we can’t wait to announce the next band!
As many of you already know, Mom’s Basement Records, an emerging US label, has announced the release of a tribute to our beloved Manges. An ambitious project that involves many bands from every corner of the world and that immediately attracted our attention. So while I was chatting with John – founder of the label – we were talking about to find a way to collaborate so we came up with idea to release a series of short interviews to present the bands that will pay homage to the Las Pezia Rockers.
The first band announced was Horror Section, from USA who picked Barrage of Hate. The Missouri foursome which is a band of the Eccentric Pop Records label (but they also released two splits with Mom’s Basement) are one of the most interesting emerging pop-punk bands; that I personally started to listening only a couple of years back when the split with Dan Vapid And The Cheats was released. So, if they have the Prophet’s blessing, do you want it not to be a solid band?
Dave – singer and guitarist of the band tells us “The Manges are one of my favorite and most important bands! I first got into them when The Manges R Good Enough had just come out. Shortly after I got to see them play in Carbondale, IL when they came to the states on tour. That was the first time I ever went to Carbondale and I ended up making great friends there and moved down there to go to school. Years have passed and they still put out great records and I’ve been lucky enough to see them a few more times live (and they never disappoint). I’m honored to be a part of this comp. All hail the Manges!“
What has always struck me in Horror Section is that they are fast, have excellent melodies and this “dark side” that give a little mysterious aura to the band. It is therefore very interesting to see how these characteristics will be combined with a song like Barrage Of Hate, one of the most famous song of the band and a true trademark of Manges-sound.
Dave tells us “Barrage of Hate is classic Manges and it’s been one of my favorite songs of theirs for years. Great melody and the lyrics fit nicely with our band’s theme. Dark and menacing words matched with trusty chords and a killer hook.“
Ho iniziato ad ascoltarli quando venne pubblicato The Manges ‘R Good Enough.
Parole oscure e minacciose accompagnate dai soliti fidati accordi in grado di conquistarti all’istante!“

Cosa rende Cj davvero straordinario e diverso dagli altri?
BIGLIETTI DISPONIBILI IN CASSA.

Mea Culpa.
All Is Well è l’ennesima fatica dei Manges, uscita per Monstero Zero, It’s Alive e Dumb Records.
Se ancora non hai comprato All is Well, rimedia, sei ancora in tempo. Adios.
I’m sorry. I would kneel down on chickpeas and slap myself for waiting so much before writing this review. All Is Well is out and… I waited thousands months before dropping two lines. A bit because I was busy and then in holidays, also because basically I’m a dick. All Is Well is yet another effort of The Manges, out for Monstero Zero, It’s Alive and Dumb Records. In short, the best labels around. About this record many ‘zines discussed enough, and for sure my review won’t be a surprise, but I wanted to say my point of view. The new record is cool. The Manges re-invented theirselves. They could make a new album similiar to Go Down or Bad Juju and make everyone happy no matter what, instead they were searching for a new way, and if the field of innovation in punk-rock music is full of landmines, the guys from Las*Pezia relying on Hervè Peawees, has found the only way possible to be “approved” by the punk-rock scene, because we all know that is very open to new ideas.
I don’t hide that since the very first chord, I was a bit wrong-footed by this sound a bit sixties/Pre-Ramones (or proto-punk or whatever the fuck it’s called) that doesn’t sound right “Manges-style” … but already after the second listen I was hooked by All Is Well, because it sounds spontaneous, because it sounds cool and especially because it’s fun.
The Manges hit us again covering I Tried To Die Young (oh ok, I didn’t know Melanie Safka at all) and putting on a series of fantastic tracks like My Bad, Honululu Plan, Don’t Screw Up The Formula, Lone Commando (All is Well) destined to be among the classics of the band.
And if you are among those worried that the gain of the guitars on this records is kept to a low level
don’t worry their still kick your ass as always during their shows.
If you haven’t bought yet, you still have time to put you right. Adios.

THE MANGES
1 – We are The Manges from La Spezia, we play punk rock music, we released a good bunch of records and played with many of our favorite bands.
2 – They’re the greatest rock’n’roll band of all times and being fans of the Ramones made us who we are today.
3 – We’re gonna meet a lot of friends and watch them all perform cool shows.
1 – Hi! We’re THE MUGWUMPS! We‘re Andi (drums), Hank (bass) and Chris
(guitar, vocals).
First Show on Halloween 2002! Since that we did some records, been quite active and also very inactive! Especially between
2009 – 2013! We’re, geeks, collect records and we like to watch TV! But we’re nice! Andi likes Metal!! Our music could probably best described as a mix of Screeching Weasel and Head!!
2 – I think it’s pretty obvious that they mean a lot! Fav band of all 3 of us!!
3 – Pretty high temperature, meeting (old) friends, world cup talk and some bad jokes about my new haircut!! I really hope that there will be some people who enjoy our set!!
4 – You can listen to our music next Saturday at the MZSummer Mash!! We don’t have facebook, bandcamp etc. …but we have a website: www.the-mugwumps.at ! There is some contact info and a few mp3s! If you have any other questions, just drop us a line!!
TEENAGE BUBBLEGUMS
1- Hi! We are Teenage Bubblegums, an Italian power punk rock trio since 2007. We all dress in black, playing fast, no stops and love songs only.
2- Are u kiddin’ me? Ramones saved our lives.
3- We are really happy to play again at the MZM. It’s a hell of party. You know, what happens at MZM stays at MZM.
1 – Hi guys, we are Tough from Piacenza\Milan, we play fast, straight and simple three chords punk rock.
2 – The Ramones mean life.
3 – We are so excited for the release of our brand new 7” called ”Obey the Ramones”, and we will play for the first time the new tunes. We wanna rock and we wanna party very hard!
4 – You can reach us on facebook and bandcamp, you will find our very beautiful stuff!!! 😉
GRISWALDS
1 – Us Griswalds are – Steve Legend on Guitar/Vocals, Ben Nuthink on Bass/Vocals and Daz Reject on Drums/Backing Vocals. We’ve been doing this Ramones fast Punk Rock since 1995!
2 – The Ramones for me (Steve Legend) we’re who got me into what we often call Pop Punk. Back when I was a teenager I was a bit of a Metaller but discovered the Ramones through their Loco Live album. I just loved the simple catchy power they gave off with songs that you could sing along too but also go crazy too. I also loved how they didn’t stop too! I was lucky enough that I got to see them 3 times live and it was always amazing, would make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up as soon as they played The Good, The Bad and The Ugly before coming out and blowing everyone away! We got to support Dee Dee back in 1996 too which was incredible. From way back then I’ve just loved that 3 chord power “Pop” Punk.
3 – The Monster Zero Mash will be like all the others – Kick-Ass of course!! Just a bit hotter cos it’s July and in Italy! Whoop!
…and of course you can buy our newest LP through MZ!!
Thanks again, Legend!
BAT BITES
1 – We are the Bat Bites. Creatures of the Night, all dressed up in black and white. We are villains of punk rock, play catchy tunes with a little bite. We love to party with our friends and dance and drink with them all night!
2 – The Ramones always have been a huge inspiration for us. We love them. It will always be our favorite band.
3 – We hope to hang out with many of our friends, see many good bands and enjoy some sun.
4 – Our first two EP’s are available on bandcamp. We have a new record coming out on the 5th of september. There’s a teaser song for the album available on youtube.
1 – We’re the Riccobellis, a punk rock band from Brescia Italy, deeply influenced by the Ramones and deeply in love with everything about punk rock.
2 – They just were, are and will always be the greatest band in the world.
3 – It’s gonna be a great weekend, so… huge fun, wild party all night long and we’ll try to contribute to keep the Ramones spirit alive for these two days of punk rock madness.
Our band it’s formed by me, Vale (lead singer-bass), Davide (guitar- chorus) and Palmina (drums-chorus) Me and Davide are friends since a long time and used to play together some years ago in a never-known punk rock band called The Sockets. We never really gave up our will to put a band together so after meeting Palmina (ex Photogenics – Coco’s) we thought to give ourselves a second try.. And.. Here we are!
02 – Well.. This surely will be the most obvious answer ever. They are the band I never get tired to listen to. They are the band that touches me the most. They were the first band who put together the coolest things that music can transmit: energy and powerfull mixed to catchy melody.. In their own and unique way. They are pure rock’n’roll. And of course my favourite band of all times.
03 – Honestly I don’t have any real expectation.. Except of course having fun and party with all the people down there! I personally love the MZM a lot and it’s one of my favourite event of the year.. I would have gone there anyway.. but since we are gonna play there too it’s gonna be even more fun!!
04 – You’ll be able to listen to us soon – not now unluckly – cause our first 7″ will be out after summer.. But just in case you want to hear us sooner.. Just come to Monster Zero Summer Fest! You can follow us on facebook at www.facebook.com/Thenutspunkrock or on twitter at https://twitter.com/thenutspunkrock
ON MY ARMS
1 – We’re a punk rock band based in Venice. We’re together since 2011 and back in that year we recorded our first demo “Ready to Go“. Our sound is influenced by historical bands such as Ramones and Riverdales, but also by the more recent Teenage Bottlerocket.
2 – They are the best band of the world, we’re grateful to them. Every time we hit the stage we keep in mind the words of Dee Dee “The Ramones saved my life. Without the Ramones would have died a million times“.
3 – We’re really happy to be part of this amazing festival. It doesn’t happen every week to play with the bands you love and party with them. we will do our best to make this festival epic. The scene in Italy exists and is pretty cool, and is a huge opportunity to have the Monster Zero Mash in Italy this year.
1 – The command was officially founded in the back of a skate shop in 2003 by a group of three veterans of different wars fought during the 90s for peace, freedom and for the glory of the Ramones. Many fighters have come and gone in recent years, some have fallen on the field, other honorably discharged, today things are like this: Cap: Guitar and vocals, Andre Monelli Bass and 1-2-3-4, Pablo Ratòn: drums
2 – It is very hard to explain because the Ramones are an other plan than any other band but if I had to say it in few words I would probably say that they are dealing with something like “life is not so disgusting, you can always go home and put on leave home and say sayonara to all“
3 – Social forums, petitions to save the whales, open debates, political forums, non alcoholic beer, posers and upstrokes guitars. Removed these things, we expect everything else.
1 – We started playing few months ago. We are the first all filipino band who played punk rock here in italy.
2 – They are the GODS.
3 – To enjoy and have some fun playing rock n roll.
4 – Sorry. We have no records. Here is our facebook page www.facebook.com/the3slugs

MUGWUMPS
1 – Ciao! Noi siamo i MUGWUMPS! Siamo Andi (batteria), Hank (basso) e Chris (chitarra, voce).
2 – I Ramones significano vita.
Whoop!
…and certamente potete comprare il nostro nuovissimo LP attraverso la MZ!!
Grazie ancora, Legend!
BAT BITES
1 – Siamo i Bat Bites.
Potete sempre seguirci su facebook oppure su twitter.
ON MY ARMS
Saluti, Cap.
THE 3 SLUGS
1 – Abbiamo iniziato a suonare qualche mese fa.
[A] – Ciao Kevin, come stai?
Nuove release all’orizzonte?
Le prime sono state a Rotterdam al Waterfront, The Watt e The Exit.
Perchè in Italia? Ci ami? 🙂 Quali sono le tue aspettative al riguardo?
[K] – Si, AMO l’Italia!
[K] – Gruppi, birra, Dj e fare festa!
[K] – Nel 1995 ero in vacanza negli USA e presi una copia di End of The Century.
Ci vediamo presto, Gabba Gabba!
[K] – Venite a fare festa con noi all’Edonè, Bergamo l’11/12 Luglio al Monster Zero Summer Mash. Thepunkrockdontstop!
Grazie!
[A] – Hi Kevin, how are you? How the things are going at Monster Zero head-quarter?
[K] – Hey Andrea, all good here, very busy with all the preparations for the Monster Zero Summer Mash in Bergamo next week. And of course watching the World Cup!
[A] – You are well-known to be the singer/bass-player of the Apers but everyone knows you run a label, called Monster Zero Records, born in 2007. How did you come up with this idea? Who is running MZR with you?
[K] – Actually it started with a party called the Monster Zero Mash. Then I found out that Banana Brain by The Mugwumps had only been released on vinyl, so I asked them if I could release it on CD. That’s how we started! Besides me, there’s my sister Kim who helps me with everything. Merel from Bat Bites takes care of the artwork and Ivo Backbreaker from the Apers helps her with stuff and takes care of the website and the newsletter. Ox from Accelerators, Stefan from Stardumb and many others are always there to help me with stuff aswell.
[A] – Monster Zero Records is definitely one of the most attractive punk rock label in Europe. What are the parameters for a band in order to join the family MZ? How do you work with the bands? New releases on the horizon?
[K] – Pfff, most important is that I like the bands, their music and the people in the band. That’s basically it. It’s my personal punkrock Pokemon, I gotta collect ’em all! And I’m proud to call all of the bands on the label my friends. That’s why sometimes it’s a bit unprofessional, but that’s the way it is. And yes, we have many new releases coming up! We just released the new record by The Windowsill and there’s new material in works by Bat Bites, Maladroit, Not Scientists, 7Years Bad Luck and The Apers!
[A] – What’s your favourite MZR release ever?
[K] – I love them all equally!
[A] – Ok, let’s talk about the Monster Zero Mash. What can you tell us about it? What are the best memories so far about all the MZM past editions?
[K] – To be honest, I don’t remember that much hehehe. All editions were special. The first few in Rotterdam, at the Waterfront, the Watt and the Exit. That was great, exciting. Rotterdam is a great city and back then, the scene was booming. Innsbruck has been amazing three times aswell. The Belgian punkrock division that drove up there 3 times to really take down the place. All the bands, all the afterparties. It’s punkrock and it’s fun.
[A] – In a couple of weeks, for the first time, there will a summer edition of the MZM. Why Italy? Do you love us? 🙂 What are your expectations about it?
[K] – Yes, I LOVE Italia! I have been talking to Franz from Otis Booking for awhile about throwing a party in Italia, and we finally decided to go for it. I expect it to be fun and I hope that many Italian punkrockers come out to support Italian and European bands that work hard for a scene they believe in. Besides that I hope to get drunk and maybe smoke some weed!
[A] – What are the plans for both nights?
[K] – Bands, beer, DJs and party action! On Saturday we also have some acoustic fun, so we start around 14:00. Non-stop Rock N Roll!
[A] – Could you spend few words about the bands involved with the fest?
[K] – Uh, I love them! Have seen most of them many times. Also excited about Nuts, Ratbones, On My Arms and 3Slugs who represent the evergrowing Italian poppunk scene. Veterans like Manges, Griswalds and Tough, newer ones like Murderburgers, Riccobellis and Bat Bites, the great comeback band The Mugwumps and these idiots from The Apers. It will be legendary.
[A] – Here at I Buy Records, we are Ramones-junkies, so we’ve to ask you something about our favourite band. What’s your first memory related to the Ramones?
[K] – In 1995 I was on holiday in the USA and I picked up a copy of End Of The Century. After that I immediately started The Apers. In 1996 Marien Nicotine, Ivo Backbreaker and myself went to Amsterdam to see them on the Adios Amigos tour. Our first show was a month later at a Ramones cover festival.
[A] – Ok, a extra question that punk-rockers don’t care, but I do. Who will win the Soccer World Cup? Please, don’t be patriotic!
[K] – I’m watching it as we speak, and I really hope that the Netherlands are gonna win it. So far no other team has really impressed me, but ofcourse Germany, France, Brasil and Argentina are all really good teams.
[A] – Ok, Kevin is time to let you go, thanks for the time you spent answering to our question. Be free to say what you want! See you soon, Gabba Gabba!
[K] – Come party with us at Edonè, Bergamo on July 11/12 at the Monster Zero Summer Mash. Thepunkrockdontstop! And check out our online store: Monster Zero Records.
Last month in Brianza, near
Milan, the release party of Everything Released on 7” 93-13 was held
and of course we could not miss it. Unblinking, we attended and enjoyed a
spectacular live performance as usual, and then bought the new box set
of The Manges.
As already guessed from the name it is a celebratory box , released by Otis Recordings, which collects all the songs released on 7” in 20
years of career of the paladins of punk rock made in Italy.
The initial shock of 40 Euro has been largely superseded as soon as I
opened the box : hand-numbered limited edition (only 333 copies ), 3 LP,
a color booklet, a poster, a photo, a patch of Manges Army, two
stickers, a print of a signedd drawing by Manuel and the download code.
Calculator in hand, it doesn’t take too much to understand that it is a
fair price point for all of the material that is inside. Then I need to
say more … I love these “nerd stuff” and not a little bit and everyone
spend money for bullshit… in my opinion these are among those well
spent for an object studied in detail and that undoubtedly represents an
added value for any collection.
The tracks have been remastered by Justin Perkins giving new life to the
songs mainly of the first 7”: clearly nothing revolutionary, it is
some finishing touch in backing vocals and in balancing the levels but
without doubt it was done a great job of “cleaning” and reducing to the
noise to a minimum that’s typical of the recordings of the 90s that we
are no longer accustomed in listen to.
For the rest who know and follow The Manges, they already know what to expect from this collection. 54 (!!!) songs that trace their career
with the hobbyhorse of the Ramones and that smell of sweat and
sacrifice, of so many hours in the rehearsal room, of beers, of running
about Europe and the States, and of such a struggle starting out at the
lowest level with lots of hard work before they reached the deserved
success.
All in one breath the Las Pezia guys show us their progress 7” after
7” (about twenty!) : More and more clear and catchy melodies, the
English pronunciation improving song after song, the drums that are
becoming faster and more powerful and the bass lines more and more
precise until reaching the peak of maturity on the third LP where now
the boys have acquired a consolidated sound, personal and mature.
In short, this is a triumph of perseverance, commitment and devotion to
the cause by these guys who have managed to carve out a big chunk in the
world of punk rock.
On the other hand if Screeching Weasel make a cover ( I Will Always Do,
if you didn’t know you’re a chicken!), if they make a split with Queers and the good old Joe sings a song for them (You Don’t Wanna Be Like Me),
and especially if Dee Dee wore the shirt of your band it really means
that you deserve so much respect.
I just wish at least another 20 years of success and I’m looking forward
to the new album which should be out in the spring, in the meantime get
yourself this box set directly from Striped Shop of Andrea, it will
certainly go in sold-out in a short time.

Tra una chiacchierata e l’altra riconosco Turncoat, Fuck Police Brutality, Die For Your Government, Underground network, New Kind Of Army, Hymn For The Dead, Death Of A Nation (grazie Markez per il rinfresco della scaletta!).
La conclusione prima dell’encore è da singalong: Come Join Us, Punk Rock Song, No Control, Robin Hood In Reverse, American Jesus e infineSorrow ( batticuore!!!).
Breve pausa e quindi richiamati a furor di popolo, eseguono Fuck Armageddon/This Is Hell, Vanity, Infected e Dept. Of False Hope.
With summer comes the proverbial sultry heat of Milan but it is also the period of great concerts and, despite of the 96.8 °F indicated by the thermometer, the event is not to be missed: after 3 years Bad Religion are back in Italy, can’t miss it!
I have to start the report in an argumentative mood with the promoters for one simple reason: I appreciated very much the start time to 8:30pm and above all the punctuality, but why it was written at 9pm on the ticket?
I know many people would have been furious to say the least, that had come from afar to see The Manges and they lost that chance for this reason! Ok, that on various social networks has been thoroughly spammed, but it was really hard to write the correct time on the ticket?Luckily, mindful of negative experiences that happen always at Alcatraz, we arrived just in time for the start of The Manges: I walk into the room and immediately start with Stalag 17/Good Morning Campers. For various reasons it had been so long that I could not see them, and after this show I can only reiterate the concept that in Italy they are the best. A cut above all, no shit. 20 years of an honorable career around Europe and the USA doesn’t happen for many bands, and no doubt they deserve to always play in front of so many people. The time allowed is only half an hour but the quartet from La Spezia takes full advantage of the few minutes available playing virtually non-stop, in a purely random memory I heard Bad Juju, My Rifle, My Direction, Motion Picture Rest Home, Barrage Of Hate, I Don’t Wanna Live in Hell, Hit The Punchball, Oh Mary!, I’m a Monkey, Wonder Wheel (unfortunately by my side, when he sang, i could barely hear Mayo …). Closing as usual with Say Goodbye To Your Generation, but alas not all capture the illustrious cover as well as they do.
Greetings, thanks, and leave the stage for Anti-Flag.
Honestly, it’s one of those groups, that are indifferent to me, or better maybe i would have enjoyed them when I was 14-15 years old. I’m not displeased (so to speak … speak more or less to the period Underground Network) but this attitude as “commies in suits” now irritates me. Far too much.
Leaving aside this judgment which is strictly personal, I have to admit that the show’s quartet of Pittsburgh has been remarkable: they sound good, have a nice live presence and know how to engage the audience. The guys in the front line, between stage diving and circle pits and a thousand political slogans enjoyed the show: I take this opportunity to meet and greet the many friends noticed a bit ‘all over the north of Italy for the event.
Between a talk and the other I recognize Turncoat, Fuck Police Brutality, Die For Your Government, Underground network, New Kind Of Army, Hymn For The Dead, Death Of A Nation (Markez thanks for refreshing me the setlist!).
Half an hour of preparation of the set and it is the turn of the immortals Bad Religion. On the notes of the slow intro Past is Dead, the lights slowly appear and so do the darling Californians: first riff and bursts the delusion, the Alcatraz becomes a pit of hell!
Immediately evident is the absence of the foreman bald Greg Hetson (replaced for the tour by guitarist Mike Dimkich of The Cult ): It is not even clear whether this is a temporary situation or a final farewell (from what I’ve read on the internet it doesn’t seems to be), it certainly does effect me to see the band without him after many years. An hour and a half of incredible show : Bad Religion are certainly not novices, and the fact of having a rhythm section with spectacular Jay Bentley + Brooks Wackerman to support the wonderful voice of prof. Greg Graffin and Brian Baker on guitar makes it even more over the top.
Since the tour is to promote True North, many pieces were taken from the new album, but there have been Classicon the course of their 33 years of fantastic career as a New Dark Ages, Generator (how many chills while running!), I Want To Conquer The World, Sinister Rouge, Suffer, Do What You Want, etc. etc. (the full setlist HERE).
The conclusion before the encore was all in singalong: Come Join Us, Punk Rock Song, No Control, Robin Hood In Reverse, American Jesus, and finally Sorrow (heartbreaking!!).
Short break and then called back, performing Fuck Armageddon/This Is Hell, Vanity, Infected and Dept. Of False Hope. Here perhaps I would have expected a little bit more by the closure, and the absence of Los Angeles is Burning hurts so much, but Bad Religion are Bad Religion and everything is permitted.
Buona lettura!
[ANDREA] – Aloha Andrea, come stai? All’s Quiet on the Eastern Front?
[ANDREA MANGES] – Bene, grazie.
[A] – Qual è la line-up?
Puoi spiegarci in breve come funziona Musicraiser?
direttamente i singoli.
[A] – Negli ultimi anni hai collaborato come produttore con i Kill That Girl, Teenage
[AM] – Ascolto molta roba vecchia e poco punk.
She Belongs To Me”, quella pop su Animal Boy. Sicuramente ci avrei messo quella.
[AM] – Hey grazie a voi! Poi stiamo fissando qualche data in Italia e all’estero per autunno
—————— We continue our series of
interviews: this time the chosen “victim” who is Andrea, singer and
guitarist of The Manges, but also the founder of the Veterans. In light of the
upcoming releases for his second band – or rather studio-project – we decided
to contact him for a friendly talk. Happy reading! [ANDREA] – Aloha Andrea, how are you? All’s Quiet on the Eastern Front? [ANDREA MANGES] –Well, thank you. I keep myself busy!
[A] – After several years of silence, finally there will be new material by The Veterans. What can we expect from these two new 7”s?[AM] – We have 4 new songs ready! From these upcoming releases, there will be more and
more alternative rock, pop and all kinds of influences. These 4 new songs are
perhaps a bit more punk, but there’s a cover of Jan & Dean, and I would say
that as a genre we have not strayed far from our first record.
[A] – What is the line-up? Also this time will there be “illustrious”
guests?
[AM] – We went to the studio and me and Alex were the ones who have the project in
hand as main creators, with Toro, the same drummer all time, because he is very
good and is a friend. At the bass we decided to call Ally of the Teenage Bubblegums because we worked with her band and we were very comfortable with
her. Distinguished guests on guitar solo Stefanino of Tough and Gardo of the Psycho Surfers. Then there’s Perry Leenhouts, the lead singer of the Travoltas,
who gave us the honor to put his vocals on 3 songs. The project Veterans owes
much to the Travoltas, it does not take much to figure it out, so for us the
participation of Perry has an important meaning.
[A] – The big news was the use of Crowdfunding. How did this idea come to be for
the Veterans? Can you explain in brief how it works Musicraiser?
[AM] – I like to try something new, I liked the fact that we in the band had total
control of the project, from writing the songs to ship the package with the
records and merchandise. Musicraiserworks like KickStarter or other
crowdfunding sites, but is specific to the music and is a site born in Italy.
If they approve your project, you have a certain period of time to be supported
and if you reach the goal they give you the money to realize the project
however, if you fail eachone recovers his money.. All or nothing. We have paid
a good part of the pressing two of the 7″s and merchandise. Obviously
those who support you are rewarded with records, merchandise, or other ”
rewards” that are established by the artist. We decided to be simple and
mostly we did a presale, a bit ‘more original than usual.
[A] – I have read many articles debating the use of crowdfunding saying things
like: crowfunding = alms. For small-medium enterprises (such as it occurred for
the Veterans) I think it is a valuable tool, but what I find ridiculous the
“exaggerated” and indiscriminate use by other artists, even going
overboard, offering even a Skype call or an exclusive appetizer… What do you
think?
[AM] – I think the same as you, and in fact I avoided to include in the project
“rewards” so squandered or in bad taste. I don’t know if the
crowdfunding is the future for independent music, but today it is one of the
many systems available through the web, and we have decided a lot with the logic
of the old DIY approach, addressing directly to the fans but also to the small
labels and distributors which are the basis of our scene. At the end, with the
utmost transparency, a Finnish label bought one of the packages that I had
prepared and for a reasonable cost got to be the only label to put their logo
on two our records. And we have total control with many copies already
distributed. [A] – Something that relies completely on the fan like crowdfunding could turn
out to be a flop but it was a great success: many Raisers from all over the
world have supported the project, allowing you to reach 116% of the
estabilished amount. Are you satisfied? What would happen in the case where the
sum had not been reached? Would the songs end up on the back burner?
[AM] – Surely we are satisfied, very happy with the confidence so many people have
shown us… that removed the fear of not making it there. It was really nice
because while we were promoting musicraiser we were in contact with a lot of
friends. Many labels were held back by not being able to get the discs
“exclusive” for them, and I can understand that because the market is
so small now. Being in the possession of too many copies of a disc that has
already been ordered by many people directly to the group can be a risk. If the
crowdfunding had gone wrong, I would have given the songs, to some labels
(there were affected), or I would have released them directly myself to the
fans. I didn’t want to lose these songs and eventually, this was the way it all
worked out. [A] – Last questions about your side-projects: would there be an opportunity in
the future for new shows with the tribute band It’s Alive? Any chance to see
the Veterans live? (Ok, it’s a question you got done 1000 times, but for the
record … it’s up to me as well) [AM] – It’s Alive, I do not know … being that The Mangesand Hervè are always very
busy and the cover band is beautiful as a small “happening” to us,
but do covers full-time seems a bit lame. The Veterans are not a real band, I
see them more as a studio project in which to involve different musicians every
time, always under the “direction” of me and Alex. And no, for the
moment there is no plan to put that on stage. But I’d like to continue to put
out music and merchandise.
[A] – I personally have a love/hate relationship with the labels as a
“working with passion and attitude” – true with great difficulty –
there are very few like this. Having crowdfunding and STRIPED punk rock shop,
do you think The Manges really need a label for further work?
[AM] – Often we are disappointed by the labels we work with, and we are concentrating
more and more Manges affairs in our hands (for example, we are releasing the
contract with the Kid Tested to recover “Rocket To You“), but to make
things right we always need a little support. The Veterans have a limited
audience but it is still a big effort to manage. For Manges, of course we are
able to produce and distribute by ourself at every level, STRIPED is going very
well, but I won’t exclude that we will work with other labels in the future.
[A]
– From the first demo until the split with the Apers: twenty years full of
records, gigs, tours and many satisfactions that brought you to be, without a
doubt, the spokesmen for the Italian punk rock in the rest of the world. In
addition to a praise worthy dedication to the cause, what you think could have
been the key points that gave the “turning point” in your career? Was
there ever a time, when you thought that the adventure with Mangeswas going to
end?
[AM] – Oh yes, It’s twenty years now. Well honestly we were very young in 1993, 16/18
years old, and in the scene we were marginal even though we were among the
first to be noticed and to get out seven inches and more. We were lucky because
pop punk exploded shortly after we started the Manges, but we found ourselves
with already far too much attention on us when we were still learning to play.
I believe that from 1996 onwards, and even more markedly since 1997 when we
came back from London, we started to differentiate and influence a bit also the
other Italian bands. Then the choice of staying on the edge of the scene and do
not try to insert ourselves within the circle of the “big fishes”. This has paid many years later in terms
of consistency and respect on the part of the scene. We were also lucky to be
covered by Screeching Weasel in 2000 and still to have a lot of sympathizers
abroad. It ‘s also true that we worked hard and thrown ourselves around Europe
and the U.S., leaving behind jobs and safeties, so it was also a bit deserved.
Sometimes we had the impression that it was going to end, but actually now I do
not think that we will stop anytime soon. We are now a family, and the passion
for writing songs, making up stories, talk about music, books, movies and
traveling together there goes more. We are writing a new album in these months,
so I feel part of a group on ball, it’s no a reunion, we never stopped. Unlike
other bands, we kept the pace low and constant, and so we never broke. Now
looking back 20 years seems like many, but it was not hard, they are just
passed very quickly.
[A] – Last year you’ve been on tour for the first time in Japan. Can you talk a
bit ‘of this experience? What differences have you noticed between their
“scene” and the Italian / European? Are there Japanese bands to
advise us of that you particularly liked?
[AM] – It was one of the best trips of my life and for sure if I hadn’t gone with Manges, I doubt I’d have ever been able to afford it. The Japanese scene is
definitely lively and well organized, not huge but we as headliners had small
venes always full and that is more than enough. I didn’t know much about Japan
so I thought it was more “globalized”, I actually learned that they
have their own culture and it is very strong, so they watch with care and
passion to the West, music and style, but always filtered by the point of view
of a world very different from ours. Staying there is a surprise and a continuous
absurdity, and after my return it took me a lot to “shake off” that
journey. The groups “to the Ramones” are those with whom we played
more times, SoCho Pistons, Idaho Rainys, Disgusteens, Kingons … there are a
lot good. The most beautiful evening was that for their Ramones Fan Club. We
only played Ramones covers… and it was a success. [A] – In recent years you have worked as a producer with Kill That Girl, Teenage
Bubblegums and with The Ponches. How do you get in this unusual position behind
the scenes? Do you think that there might be a future for you in this role? [AM] – I produced Kill That Girl and Teenage Bubblegums and I believe both have done
great albums so I think I’ve worked well although I’m not very experienced in
that role. Yes, The Poncheswere recorded by Alex but artistically were
produced by themselves. I gave him a hand, a few tips, wrote lyrics and sang a
little bit. It was an honor. I would love if I could do it again, but it takes
time to dedicate to certain things, and it is not possible to do it for work, I
will choose to use the time for Manges or in case the Veterans. Then, if the
opportunity to work with other groups will happen again, I will see. [A]
– What are the discs you’re listening to the most? For many they are the
coolest group in recent years .. and to others they suck: one thing is certain,
the Masked Intruder are the most talked-about of the moment, what do you think?
[AM] – I listen to a lot of old stuff and a little of punk. Masked Intruder aren’t
really a hit to me, indeed. I think they are a good band, nothing special, more
than anything else I do not understand why everyone is freaked out for them.
Oh, that’s okay.
[A] – As usual with our guests, we ask a question about the Ramones. Imagine
being a teenager again, but you know a girl but is a great sinner and does not
know the Ramones (“Who are them? Ah, I thought it was a company that makes meatballs, sauces and icecreams! If I’m not mistaken I also saw a shirt from H&M “). You are then offered to fix her a cd (or rather a tape) to win
her heart and fill this serious gap. What would be the ideal track-list?
[AM] – Even as a teenager, however, I liked girls who already knew who the Ramones
were! If you really have no idea it is impossible to explain from scratch the
whole history and philosophy. You’d better go along and say, “Yes, those
of the meat sauce, come to dinner that we make Marky’s spaghetti sauce”
True, however, we used to make mix tapes, CDs not yet. Too difficult now to
make a tracklist, but I can tell you that among the romantic pieces I was crazy
for “She Belongs To Me”, the pop one of Animal Boy“. Surely it would
have had that.
[A]
– Before concluding the interview and asking the last questions, we would
like to thank you for being so kind and helpful to us! Do you have any news to
give us a preview of? Do you think if we start a campaign Musicraiser we will
lead, someday, to having Screeching Weasel play in Italy? 🙂 [AM] – Hey thanks to you! We have nothing for sure but like I said, we are writing a
new album so I hope something happens later! At the very least go to record!
Then we are setting some dates in Italy and abroad for autumn but nothing
confirmed yet. The SW I hope that sooner or later will be … we have always
said to Ben Weasel that we are many who want to see them here.
