E’ sulla bocca di tutti ormai da tempo, quindi non servono grandissime presentazioni, sicuramente diffondere il comunicato ufficiale può aiutare a fare un po’ di chiarezza a chi ancora ha qualche dubbio o perplessità.

La mia opinione è che sarà davvero una bella festa, oserei dire in famiglia. Tanti amici, tante band, tanta bella musica e i soliti accordi per quattro giorni. Non basta?

Nel nostro piccolo, stiamo cercando di dare il nostro contributo così unendo le forze con altre realtà come S.N.A.F.U., No Reason Records e Poison Heart ‘Zine (rip) abbiamo deciso di realizzare una fanzine in vecchio stile. Nessuna anticipazione – anche perchè siamo nel bel mezzo dei lavori – mi permetto di dire a nome di tutti che siamo davvero orgogliosi di come si sta evolvendo consapevoli che sarà davvero un bel “giornalino”.

A quanto pare sono rimasti pochi posti liberi nell’ostello punk rock, quindi consiglio vivamente a chi avesse bisogno di un posto letto di prenotare. Concerto esclusivo e compilation del Raduno incluse nel prezzo. Mica male.

Innovative, free admission, all ages, open to everyone and to all kinds of ideas. Andrea Caredda (the Manges, Veterans, Striped Music) and Franz Barcella (Otis Tours, Edonè, Radio BAM!) have spent a big part of their lives being active in the underground scene, and they are now working together on a new festival, based on the very simple concept:

“what if we bring together all the labels, distros, bands and artists of the International punk rock scene, in a single, open event?”

Not a single brand. Not built around a single name, or a star. Just a showcase, and a rally (“raduno”), for a part of the underground that never stopped being active, and also a great party that everyone is invited to join.

Punk Rock Raduno will take place at Spazio Giovani Edonè in Bergamo, a multifunctional venue already known for underground events like Bergamo Sottosuolo, The Exhibition Night, Monster Zero Summer Mash, Vintage Roots Festival, Bergamo Reggae and more.

To help all the people that will attend from out of town (and out of Italy), taking advantage of the (very close) Bergamo international airport, and to create an original “festival experience”, the dedicated offer is #punkrockhostel In the event days, the high-quality Bergamo Hostel, located in Monterosso (10 minutes walk to the venue) will accept only the festival crowd and artists. Beside accommodation and breakfast, the guests will receive a copy of the Punk Rock Raduno compilation, gadgets, and access to an exclusive secret show that will take place in the hostel. The punk record labels that will take part in the first edition are Surfin’ Ki Records (Italy), It’s Alive Records (USA), Monster Zero Records (Austria), Striped Records (Italy).

They will have at least two bands of their roster playing at the fest, and they contributed to the release of a vinyl LP of the Punk Rock Raduno. 18 previosly unreleased or rare songs from the 18 bands composing the festival line up. The record will be available at the event, and hostel guests will get a free copy. And there is more: DJ sets, Ramones.World exhibit, merchandise and records vendors, the Punk Rock Raduno fanzine.

Edonè is also an excellent hangout for food&beverages lovers, with his choice of restaurant, pizzeria, burgers, cupcakes, Italian specialties, cocktail bar. The Sunday July 17 will be dedicated to a special edition of Filler, the Italian convention of skate/punk/hardcore/DIY art and illustration.

Correva il lontano anno 1999, il punk rock era ancora in ottima salute, ed io ero uno sbarbatello 15 enne che iniziava ad appassionarsi alla musica. Ricordo come fosse oggi quando un mio caro amico, qualche anno più grande di me, mi prestò Short Music For Short People, dicendomi che se davvero mi interessava il punk rock, in questa compilation avrei trovato la risposta e probabilmente tante band interessanti. Effettivamente aveva ragione: c’erano 101 bands con pezzi di 30 secondi ciascuno e almeno metà di quelle band sono tutt’ora tra le mie preferite. Ma perchè questa inutile prefazione?

Beh, perchè mi piacerebbe pensare che Jimmy Vapid abbia realizzato questi pezzi ispirandosi un po’ a quella compilation, visto che è riuscito nell’ impresa di mettere 28 pezzi (14 per lato) in un 7”… e non sbuffo nemmeno all’idea di dovermi alzarmi dal divano per cambiare lato, quindi per quanto mi riguarda…ha fatto goal.

Per rendere il tutto più gustoso, Jimmy ha utilizzato un approccio totalmente DIY, registrando nel fienile di casa sua, con una batteria da 70$ (con un piatto rotto!), microfoni da quattro soldi (probabilmente quelli del Canta Tu) e amplificatori da 5-10 Watt. Tutto troppo interessante per passare inosservato, cosicché Carlo ci ha messo le mani sopra, ed ecco che il cerchio si chiude con la pubblicazione sotto la Surfin’ Ki Records.

Il disco è uscito all’inizio del 2013 ma solo poche settimane fa, sono stato in grado di ascoltarlo… credo che tuttavia valga la pena dare un po’ di spazio perchè probabilmente in molti non ne sono a conoscenza.

Ma come sono i pezzi? Come ve li potete immaginare. Suonano come brani super essenziali, suonati veloci e sporchi come se fossero le demo dei primissimi Ramones ma con lo stile degli ultimi Vapids (di The Point Remains The Same, per intenderci). Non fa in tempo ad entrarti un pezzo in testa, che già ne parte uno nuovo, e questa cosa un po’ mi scombussola.. e mi spinge ad ascoltare ancora una volta. E ancora un’altra volta. E ancora. E ancora. Un po’ per capire bene i pezzi, un po’ per ricordare qualche mini strofa, e un po’ perchè mi piace davvero. E poi se mi mette una cover di Daniel Johnston, come faccio a non volergli bene?

Il mio consiglio è di comprarvelo, il Surfin’ Ki Store ha ottimi prezzi e speciali Deal Packs per accaparrarvi anche gli altri lavori di Jimmy Vapid. Fateci un salto e riempite il carello, tanto Short Music For Short People, potete scaricarvela senza problemi che a nessuno importa!

It was in the distant year of 1999, punk rock was still in excellent health, and I was one greenhorn 15 year old who began to love music. I remember like it was today when a friend of mine, a few years older than me , lent me Short Music For Short People, telling me that if I really was interested in punk rock , in this compilation I found the answer and probably many interesting bands. Indeed he was right: there were 101 bands with songs of 30 seconds each, and at least half of those band are still among my favorites. But why this unnecessary introduction?

Well, because I ‘d like to think that Jimmy Vapid has made these songs inspired a little bit by this compilation, since he was able to put 28 tracks (14 per side ) in a 7”… and I even not snort about the idea of having to get up from the couch to change sides, so as far as I’m concerned … he scored a goal.

To make it more tasty, Jimmy has used a totally DIY approach, recording in the barn of his home, with a drums of 70$ (with a broken cymbal!), microphones from peanuts (probably those of the games for children) and 5-10 Watt amps . All too interesting to pass unnoticed , so that Carlo has put his hands above, and here we come full circle with the publication under the Surfin’ Ki Records. The album was released in the beginning of 2013, but i was able to listen to him just a few weeks ago … I think however it’s worth it because probably many still are not managed to do so.

But how are the songs? As you can imagine them there. They sound like super essential songs, played fast and dirty as if they were the very first demos of the Ramones but with the style of the last Vapids ( The Point Remains The Same, for instance). Do not have time to have a song in your head, that already there’s a new one, and this thing a little upsets me.. and pushes me to listen once again. And again another time. And again. And again. A bit because I want to understand the songs, a bit to remember some mini verse, and a little because I really like them. And then if he put a cover of Daniel Johnston, how can I not like him?

My advice is to buy the 7”, the Surfin’ Ki Store has great prices and special deal packs to grab also the other works of Jimmy Vapid.
