Screeching Weasel + Dwarves + Angry Samoans + The Bugs - 17.08.2013 - Live @ The Observatory (Santa Ana)
Come potevo perdermelo?
Questi i pezzi eseguiti: I'm getting fat, Lesbo lesbo, I never went gay, Back in the Barrio, Eharmony rejected me, Meth On My Mind, I wish I was a mexican, Email from a shemale, Dave Navarro's Goatee Fucking Sucks.
You Stupid Jerks, Gimme Sopor, Hot Car, You Stupid Asshole, I'm a Pig, Inside my brain, Haizman's Brain Is Calling, Ballad of Jerry Culan, Not of this Earth, They saved Hitler's Cock (delirio assoluto!) Time has come today...introdotta da Baby...One more time (...si, quella di Britney Spears!!).
Parte l'intro e dopo qualche lunghissimo secondo spunta Ben Weasel. I'm gonna strangle you e scoppia il delirio.
My Rights, I Wrote Holden Caulfiend (che chicca, non me l'aspettavo!!!!), Veronica hates me, Totally, Don't turn off the lights... che dire.. un inno dopo l'altro.
Bel gesto.
Chiusura bomba con What we hate e Cool Kids.
In general, I have always considered myself unlucky enough , one of those "in the wrong place at the wrong time" of the type that if there is only a big shit on a sidewalk 1km wide I'm the one to step on it. But sometimes the wheel turns, and the luck came to my side, the fact is that I was "in the right place at the right time " in California, in conjunction with this super-show. How could I miss it? So after waiting "only" for 4 ½ months with Pably Gluesniffers and our sweet halfs we head to Santa Ana, searching the Observatory.
After wandering for an hour and a half between St. Harbor and South Harbor Blvd we finally found the place, not very big but perfect for the event, a kind of arena with 3 raised rings , ideal for enjoying the concert from all the angles. Needless to say that the first ring was unapproachable: I never seen a mosh pit so violent.
At 19:30 on time, the Bugs who are the band of Dangerous Dave of the Queers open the night. In less than 20-25 minutes of pure "ignorance and irony" interacting a lot with the audience they presented the new album, alternating with songs of the debut album . The pieces performed were: I'm getting fat , Lesbo lesbo, I never went gay, Back in the Barrio, eHarmony rejected me, Meth On My Mind , I wish I was a mexican, Email from a shemale, Dave Navarro's Goatee Fucking Sucks.
The crowd is beginning to be more and more large and it's the time of the Angry Samoans. The legends and stories about Metal Mike now no longer count and already seeing him dressed as a teenager with hat in reverse, boots and basketball tank too worth the price of the ticket. After giving instructions until the last to his band as a great conductor opens with Right side of my mind . He jumps, squirms like crazy, rolls on the stage, and encourages the public ... what to say .. absolute number one!
Midway through the concert leaves the microphone to drummer putting himself behind the drums for 3-4 songs and also with the roles reversed both do an excellent job performing all the classics hits of the band: You Stupid Jerks, Gimme Sopor, Hot Car, You Stupid Asshole, I'm Pig, Haizman's Brain Is Calling, Ballad of Jerry Culan, Not of this Earth, They saved Hitler's Cock ( absolute delirium !) Time has come today introduced by ... Baby one More Time ( ... yes, that one of Britney Spears! ). The end is with two kick-ass covers of "the most influential band of the West Coast" (cit. Metal Mike), Wasted and Nervous Breakdown. In closing, Metal Mike thanked those present and dispenses pearls of wisdom "Enjoy the Dwarves and Screeching Weasel. Ah, the Screeching Weasel. They did 2 hours of fucking sound check." Epic.
I was super curious to see the Dwarves but unfortunately playing before the Screeching Weasel was too harmful. Obviously for me. Do you remember the first date when you were a kid? Hands sweating, nervousness, and eyes fixed on the clock? Here, I was like that and it's certainly not the best way to keep a close watch to a concert.
Sounds to me they were not flawless, but I have to say that Blag Dahlia has an incredible band. I honestly prefer the more catchy songs of the last albums, but despite the setlist was focused mainly on pieces "more hardcore" in any case they did Dominator, Let 's Fuck, Stop me, Fefu, Astro Boy .... and I am more than satisfied.
Now the Observatory is filled to the limit , maybe more as breathing is very difficult. I don't give a fuck and I think only at the beginning of the concert, the event that I waited since I was more or less 15 years old, when I knew the band. Since then they have been, they are and they will be an integral part of my life and I am sure also for many of you, even those who have a Weasel or a 27 tattooed but now prefers to hide. I am only interested about the music and there are very few rivals in this. Ethics, morality and personal issues I never concerned. Ok , I close this parenthesis perhaps unnecessary, but I'm writing this while on the plane to go back to Italy, so I have to fill the time somehow?
The stage is now setted and gradually the band makes the entrance. The intro starts and after few long seconds Ben Weasel appears. I'm gonna strangle you and bursts delirium. It blows me away, I connect to the stage and everything around me disappears. I don't care if the fat lady behind me is pushing me, I don't care if the asian boy holding a mini-cam for 4 hours creeps me out. I'm listening to the songs of Screeching Weasel. I sing at the top of my voice: Slogans, Dingbat, I wanna be with you tonight ( Honey, I'm sorry if i didnt consider you throughout the concert , but you've to understand me.... and by the way it was great to hold your hand during this song! ) Super Market Fantasy , Peter Brady and Guest List. So far Ben Weasel doesn't interact but is concentrated and inspect the crowd , it seems that he looks to everyone, one by one, in the eyes to charge even more. Ben Weasel feeds on by the energy of other people. Whether positive or negative, it doesn't matter: he charges himself in this way. I had this idea in mind , and I've had confirmation after this concert . The provocations are not missed, a bunch of 3-4 boneheads (seen with my own eyes Hitler tattoos and Celtic crosses ) it takes aim at throwing glasses, spit and ice cubes - yes, even this - but he keeps his cool and responds with irony, showing a great self-control .. and he takes more load sharing and singing a song after another , My Rights , I Wrote Holden Caulfiend ( what a gem! I didn't expect !!), Veronica hates me , Totally , Don't turn off the lights ... what to say .. a hymn after another.
But the polemical side of Ben that we like less is around the corner and he back to talk about the facebook clash he had with Tony Reflex of the Adolescents few weeks ago thanking him for the excellent publicity and for contributing to another sold-out show. Oh, I haven't seen any Adolescents t-shirts. It is now a raging river and takes aim at the 4 nazis , causes them , attacks them and talks and talks and talks ... a real show!
Between a song and another the first ring is really a pit of hell, like the people take a running start from the top ring and literally dives on pogo. Ben Weasel in father version, recommended to don't do it again and urges the public to go to the merch-table of the other bands . Nice gesture.
There is a tribute to the Ramones with Teenage Lobotomy, and from here on in is a succession of kick-ass hits like My Brain Hurts, Cindy 's on Methadone, Hey Suburbia, I Can See Clearly. Retreat for the break and in the meantime bursts a big fight sedated in 3 seconds by the huge dudes of the security. Explosive closing with What we hate and Cool Kids.
We waited in vain for BW, I would like to talk a bit with him but I was aware that it would be difficult and he probably would send me to hell before the second question. Amen.
We caught Zac Damon, Mike Hunchback, Blag Dahlia and The Bugs, all very cordial and super surprised by our presence. Can I say that was the most beautiful concert of my life? Yes!
It isn't the historical line-up, it's Ben Weasel Karaoke Show, Ben Weasel is an asshole , Ben Weasel is a jerk , etc. etc.. I've heard many, indeed too many of this sentence. You know what? I do not give a FUCK! I've waited a lifetime the opportunity to hear these songs live and I did, realizing a dream going out of the Observatory with a beaming smile. Since hardly we will see the SW in Europe, I highly recommend everyone to move the ass and go see them in the States at least once, it will be a memory that will be difficult for you to erase.
